Starved Rock State Park, a regional tourist attraction, is located 5 miles from the city. Peru has evolved into a regional commercial center due to the completion of interstate 39 in the early 1990's, developing a shopping mall, and attracting several additional national retailers and small industrial/manufacturing firms.
