Boston Scoliosis Brace

Application of the Orthosis

  1. Proper application usually takes two people; however, most patients, with practice, have been able to do this by themselves. You must be sure that the Orthosis is tightened sufficiently or you will lose the necessary correction that is needed.
  2. The Orthosis is to be worn over a cotton or cotton-blend undershirt with the underpants worn over the top. For females, the Orthosis is worn over the bra.
  3. Putting The Orthosis On

    1. Stand up with your helper standing behind holding the Orthosis in the left or right hand.
    2. Your helper then puts the Orthosis in front of you with the opening in the back.
    3. The helper then reaches around you with an arm on each side of you and spreads the Orthosis wide enough so you can step into it.
    4. Make sure all of the straps on the brace are on the outside of the plastic module.
    5. Make sure that the Orthosis is not twisted and is facing straight ahead. The opening of it should be in the back so your spine and the crease of your buttocks are centered between the edges of the openings.
    6. BEND YOUR HIPS AND KNEES to about a 45-degree angle. The Orthosis will fit properly only if this is done.
    7. With your hands on the "hip" portion of the Orthosis, push it toward your feet so that the sausage-shaped pads on the inside fit above your hip bones and below your rib cage on both sides. This will give maximum comfort and make it easier for you to breathe.
    8. Pull the extra cloth from your undershirt out at the opening at the back. Make sure there are no wrinkles in the undershirt. WRINKLES CAN CAUSE SORES ON YOUR SKIN.
    9. Your helper then threads the Velcro straps through the buckles and fastens them loosely.
    10. Next lie prone on the floor or bed and have your helper finish tightening the straps to the marks placed on them by your Orthotist. Again make sure that the opening is of equal distance on both sides of the spine as previously stated.
    11. Once you have done this, roll over on your back with your knees bent to a 45-degree angle and again push down at the waist of the module toward your feet; this will again lock it in place on your pelvis.
