Hip Orthosis - Abduction

Patient Care and Use Guide

Hip Abductor Orthosis
Introduction

You have just received your new orthosis from your orthotist.

If this is your first appliance, you may have some questions as to its care and use. An understanding of the orthosis will ease many concerns you may have initially.

Your physician has prescribed a hip abductor (or hip orthosis,) to promote healing and good positioning of your hip. The information we orthotists are providing should assist you in putting the orthosis on properly. The two recommended positions for applying the Hip Abduction Orthosis are 1) while lying on your back in bed or 2) while sitting at the side of the bed.

Applying the Orthosis While Lying on Your Back:

1. Open all Velcro straps sticking each strap to itself to prevent catching on other things.
2. Slide waist (pelvic) section under your waist and pull it out the other side so that the plastic pieces on each side of your waist are located over your hips. Lift your thigh carefully into the thigh section.
3. Feel for the hip joint of the orthosis so that it is along the middle of the side of your leg. Place the hip joint of the orthosis over your hip joint.
4. Fasten the Velcro pelvic or waist strap securely around your waist.
5. Fasten the thigh straps by coming to a half-sitting position.
6. Come to a sitting position at the side of the bed. Stand up. If the hip joint is not centered over your hip joint and the middle of the side of your leg, loosen all straps, readjust, and tighten straps again snugly. An undershirt can improve comfort if worn under the orthosis. Sweat pants and other elastic-waisted garments work the best.
7. The thigh cuff will be longer on the inside of your knee to help keep you from crossing over past the midline of your body. You should be able to bend your knee to 90 degrees without the plastic digging in behind your knee.

Applying the Orthosis While Sitting on the Side of the Bed:

1. Carefully come to a sitting position on the side of the bed.
2. Open all Velcro straps.
3. Position the waist (pelvic) band so that the plastic is the same distance forward on both sides. Lift your leg carefully into the thigh section.
4. Position the orthosis so that the hip joint of the brace is over yours and the bar runs down the middle of the side of your leg.
5. Tighten the Velcro pelvic band strap and the thigh straps.
6. Stand up. If the hip joint of the brace is not centered over yours and over the middle of the side of your leg, loosen all velcro, readjust, and tighten straps again snugly. An undershirt can improve comfort if worn under the orthosis. All other clothing should be worn on top of the orthosis. Sweatpants and other elastic-waisted garments work the best.
7. The thigh cuff will be longer on the inside of your leg to help keep you from crossing over past the midline of your body. You should be able to bend your knee to 90 degrees without the plastic digging in behind your knee.

Even though your orthosis is constructed of the highest quality materials available to the industry, a problem or situation may develop for which you need assistance. If this happens, contact your Orthotist as soon as possible to have the repairs made.

If there should be any questions not answered in this text, feel free to ask your Physician or your Orthotist.
